Nicola Kerr Discusses Career, Happiness, and Not Having ‘All of the Boxes Ticked’ Early On with Urban Scholars Programme Students
PUBLISHED ON: 04/26/2021
On 24 April, Nicola Kerr, a Partner in Brown Rudnick’s Corporate and Employment Practice Groups, presented to over 60 students as part of the Firm-sponsored Urban Scholars Programme (USP). International law firm Brown Rudnick is collaborating with The USP at Brunel University London, which provides enriched learning experiences for pupils aged 12 -18 from economically challenged backgrounds representing 31 schools across 10 of London’s 32 boroughs. The students attend sessions delivered on the Brunel University London campus for one Saturday every month for three years.
During the Saturday session, Nicola spoke candidly about her career, the pandemic, and the events from her childhood that led her to pursue a career of happiness. She discussed how having five jobs in as many years at the start of her career demonstrated that it wasn’t necessary to have “all the boxes ticked” whilst the students were still in the early part of their lives.
Nicola expressed to the students that, “Everything that happens to you will shape you. My ambition at school was to be really happy; it meant each time I went a little bit off track, I could identify it and change to be or do something more positive and to be more resilient.” Nicola added, “It’s very difficult then to look on anything then as a ‘negative experience.’ It goes for mistakes as well as victories.”
The Brown Rudnick programme is the first funding and strategic collaboration between Brunel University USP and a law firm. The programme serves to educate, inspire, and equip USP students with a toolkit to pursue a career of their choice. The collaboration dovetails with the Firm’s commitment to contributing to the long-term diversification of the legal profession and students’ general employment prospects by utilising the lawyers’ collective talents to serve communities in meaningful ways.
Brown Rudnick is invested in Equity, Inclusion & Diversity initiatives, providing opportunities for lawyers and business staff to participate in programs that support these ideals in the communities where the Firm has offices. Social mobility is an aspect of diversity that is an important aspect of the Firm’s approach to this work.
