London, 24 March 2021: International law firm Brown Rudnick LLP has announced a collaboration with The Urban Scholars Programme (USP) at Brunel University London. Launched in 2003, USP is a unique three-year programme, which provides enriched learning experiences for pupils aged 12 -18 from economically challenged backgrounds representing 31 schools across 10 of London’s 32 Boroughs.

The students are selected by their schools based on their academic talents and untapped potential. Importantly, the parents of those selected must not have attended University. Urban Scholars attend monthly Saturday sessions at the Brunel University campus in Uxbridge, which are aimed at enhancing the skills, aspirations, and career preparedness of participants. Programmes are currently delivered virtually because of the global COVID-19 pandemic. However, the students are eager to be back on campus, as sustained experiences in university spaces are an essential feature of the programme. The Brown Rudnick programme is the first funding and strategic collaboration between Brunel University USP and a law firm. This opportunity introduces students to the legal profession and offers a direct connection to professionals who will provide mentoring, a wide variety of engagement activities, workshops, and other learning opportunities.

Neil Micklethwaite, Managing Partner of Brown Rudnick LLP in London said: “If there is any hope of tackling the lack of diversity in the legal profession, we have to start with young people at school. USP supports bright students from underprivileged backgrounds by providing them with role models, as well as helping them with their confidence, academic, and reasoning skills. Crucially, this programme introduces students to career opportunities that they might not otherwise have pursued.”

Jane Colston, Partner in Brown Rudnick’s Litigation & Arbitration Practice Group and Joint Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Partner said: “The pandemic has exacerbated inequality in education. There is an urgent need for this kind of programme, especially now. Our collaboration with the Urban Scholars Programme aligns with Brown Rudnick’s Equity, Diversity & Inclusion efforts and desire to do our part in broadening access to the legal profession. While USP provides the students with exposure to a broad range of industries, Brown Rudnick’s participation will offer these students inspiration, mentors, and work experience tailored to prompt an interest in the law. However, what really appealed to us was that everyone at Brown Rudnick can take part and contribute to this programme.”

Antoine Rogers, Urban Scholars Programme Co-Director said: “We are thrilled to work with Brown Rudnick. More than the financial sponsorship, the collaboration will give young people the social capital that enables them to compete with their more economically advantaged peers; to level the playing field for talented young people who are less likely to cross paths with lawyers, but who nonetheless aspire to enter that world. Brown Rudnick is helping us create a context for true social mobility and the Urban Scholars Team is grateful.”

At the inaugural session, Abdur-Razzaq “Razz” Ahmed, an Associate of Brown Rudnick’s Litigation & Arbitration Practice Group, said to the students of the Programme: “We see a lot of opportunity to pass on what we know and have learned during the course of our careers, and to draw on our network to help you develop yourselves and your skills. With that guidance, we hope that you have the real, unwavering self-belief that you can pursue any career that you want to.”
