The Law360 story “Bankruptcy Cases to Watch in the Second Half of 2021” listed only four cases — Purdue Pharma, Mallinckrodt, Boy Scouts of America, and Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. International law firm Brown Rudnick LLP is playing a preeminent role in each of the four “significant pending cases." Though the pace of new bankruptcy cases slowed in the first half of 2021, the proceedings of large and complex cases like these continue to wind their way through the nation's insolvency courts,” the article noted.

Brown Rudnick represents the Coalition of Abused Scouts for Justice in the Boy Scouts of America bankruptcy proceedings. The Coalition represents approximately 18,000 survivors of sexual abuse. On July 1, 2021, the parties announced a settlement impacting thousands of sexual abuse victims and their families, and representing a historic moment in victims’ rights advocacy. Brown Rudnick lawyers are also advising on the Purdue Pharmaceuticals and Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals Chapter 11 cases. These opioid-related bankruptcies were precipitated by the thousands of lawsuits brought against the debtors by states, municipalities, and American Indian tribes. Purdue Pharma is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the United States and was the creator of Oxycontin. Mallinckrodt was the largest producer of opioids and, as such, Purdue Pharma and Mallinckrodt are two of the most important opioid-related Chapter 11 cases in history. In addition, Brown Rudnick is advising on the Puerto Rico bankruptcy, serving as claims counsel for the Puerto Rico Financial Oversight and Management Board and acting through its Special Claims Committee.
