Alessandra Carcaterra Messing is a Senior Associate in the Firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. She focuses her practice on patent litigation in the federal district and appellate courts, as well as International Trade Commission and Patent Trial and Appeal Board proceedings. Alessandra has extensive experience litigating in federal courts throughout the country, including many of the most popular districts for patent litigation in Texas, Delaware, California, and Florida. She has represented a diverse base of clients in over 100 patent disputes and handles all aspects of dispute resolution and litigation, including initial counseling, prefiling investigations, strategic analysis of claims and defenses, technical analysis, case management, fact and expert discovery, depositions, Markman proceedings, oral argument, all forms of motion practice, trial, post-trial proceedings, appeals, and settlement negotiations. She has been recognized as a Super Lawyers "Rising Star" in Intellectual Property Litigation every year since 2017.

Alessandra holds a B.S. in Biochemistry, magna cum laude, from Northeastern University and has successfully represented clients in a range of industries and technologies, including mechanical and consumer products, smartphone hardware and software, power tools, manufacturing, optics, automotive parts and systems, apparel and footwear, wireless communications, smart speakers, LED displays, digital signal processing, networking, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. She has recently begun focusing her patent litigation practice on regulated industries. In addition to her technical acumen, Alessandra regularly takes an active role in the analysis of economic issues offering creative solutions to her clients on issues related to damages and the ITC's domestic industry requirement. Prior to joining Brown Rudnick, she was an associate at the former, long standing IP boutique firm Kenyon & Kenyon LLP.

Alessandra has been deeply committed to improving diversity, equity, and inclusion in her academic and professional institutions for over 15 years. As the mother of two young children, parenthood has deepened her commitment to social justice and to utilizing her position of privilege to address systemic inequities within the legal profession and society at large. She is the 2020 recipient of Brown Rudnick’s Elizabeth A. Ritvo Award for her sustained commitment and exceptional contributions in furtherance of equity, inclusion, and diversity at Brown Rudnick and beyond.

Alessandra is an active participant in Brown Rudnick’s recruitment and mentorship efforts and maintains an active pro bono practice working with the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, KIND (Kids in Need of Defense), Lawyers for Good Government, and We The Action.

Alessandra is Co-Chair of the Firm’s New York Women's Initiative, which is focused on strengthening internal and external communities and advancing the professional development of women attorneys within the Firm. She also serves on the Firm’s Associate Liaison Committee.



Represents a patent owner in a series of litigations related to networking technologies.

Represented a software company focused on R&D of audio, signal processing, machine learning, AI, and speech recognition technologies in patent infringement claims leading to a successful verdict against a leading American multinational e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and AI technology company.

Represented an audio/video integration system company in its claims of patent infringement against several automotive manufacturers.

Represented an app developer in a patent infringement case related to location tracking technologies against several smartphone companies and technology companies.

Defended an athletic footwear and apparel company against patent infringement claims brought by an American sportswear competitor.

Represented an LED display manufacturer in ITC and district court proceedings concerning infringement of patents covering modular LED display panels.

Represented a patent owner in a series of cases involving semiconductor technology.

Defended a manufacturer of optical fiber testing equipment against patent infringement claims concerning OTDR equipment.

Defended a power tool manufacturer in ITC proceedings concerning infringement of patents directed to injury mitigation technologies.

Defended an American clothing and accessories retailer in ITC proceedings concerning infringement of patents directed to laser abrasion technologies.

Represented a multinational engineering and technology company in ITC proceedings related to infringement of patents directed to innovative automobile wiper blade designs and technologies.
