Financial Services – Contentious

Brown Rudnick LLP continues to 'be on the up' as a result of a growing team which most notably recently welcomed the arrival of the 'excellent' Jamie Symington from the FCA. Now with four partners at its disposal, the team has the strength-in-depth to handle a significant volume and variety of regulatory enforcement action/investigations for both individuals and institutions. 'Very experienced and tenacious' team head Peter Bibby recently secured a favourable settlement for a UK asset management firm in an FCA investigation into alleged front office failings which made the firm vulnerable to an attempted fraud worth around $120m. 'A pleasure to work with', junior partner Chloe Pawson Pounds is also gaining an excellent reputation in the market and is advising a former senior executive of a major UK bank in relation to an FCA investigation into the bank’s treatment of customers and the associated conduct of the executive and certain other members of the bank's senior management.


M&A: smaller deals, up to £50m - ranked: tier 1

The team at Brown Rudnick LLP is led by Mark Dorff, who specialises in complex cross-border transactions. Lena Hodge is experienced in advising public and private companies and US sponsors on IPOs and secondary fundraisings and M&A, among other matters; she recently acted for Victoria plc, an international designer, manufacturer and distributor of floor coverings, on its €274m acquisition of Keraben Grupo, a ceramic tile manufacturer based in Spain, as well as its €56.5m acquisition of Italian company Ceramiche Serra. Nicholas Vasquez, who regularly handles M&A transactions for real estate and private equity funds, particularly in the hospitality industry, is also a noted member of the team.


Venture capital - ranked: tier 3

Headed by Mark Dorff, Brown Rudnick LLP 's 'excellent' venture capital team handles work across the investment lifecycle for investors and investees in the life sciences, technology and impact investment sectors. Leveraging its significant US presence, the firm excels at advising on cross-border mandates, be it on behalf of foreign investors investing into a UK structure or where UK or European companies are looking to raise funds, commercialise or exit abroad. Led out of London by Sophie McGrath and also including significant corporate and tax input out of New York, the team recently advised big data tech start-up, Knowhere Limited, on its successful move to the West Coast of the US to further expand its company (having previously raised funds in the UK). McGrath has also developed a particular niche in relation to impact investment matters including her recent work for   LGT Venture Philanthropy on its Series F-2 investment into M-KOPA, a renewables energy company providing solar energy in Kenya as an alternative to kerosene. Nicholas Vasquez also regularly handles venture capital work as part of his broader corporate and private equity offering; he recently acted for Gilo Industries Group and its founder on the issue of shares and investment into the company by Kuang-Chi Group, a Chinese disruptive technology group and secondary purchases of shares by Kuang-Chi and current shareholder, Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Advanced Investments Group. Other clients include FLOWERBX, Gilde Healthcare Partners, Impact Ventures and VideoDoc.


Crime: general - ranked: tier 4

Brown Rudnick LLP's 'truly inspirational’ general crime team consists of ‘formidable practitioners’ headed by the ‘completely brilliant’ Mark Beardsworth. The firm represents professionals, high-net-worth families and celebrities in a range of crime matters including historic child sex abuse, sexual assault and data protection offences. Recent cases include evasion of value-added tax (VAT), tax fraud and money laundering.

It is adept at handling cases of complex fraud and regulatory disputes spanning multiple jurisdictions. The firm recently acted for Threadneedle in defence of a $125m claim in the High Court brought to companies within the Otkritie Group relating to fraud and deceit and vicarious liability. ‘Very highly regarded’ Neil Micklethwaite heads the team, supported by Jane Colston who is ‘fierce, super-efficient, indefatigable and a winner’. The firm continues to act for a top-tier UK university on various issues such as data protection breaches and mis-use of confidential data and intellectual property (IP) rights by a former employee. Brown Rudnick LLP's intellectual property group acts for a client roster that includes Dean & DeLuca and Novaerus Patents.  Alexander Carter-Silk heads the practice alongside Thomas Meyers, who specialises in the life sciences sector.  Steven James has particular expertise handling matters relating to new and innovative technologies.
