It is my pleasure to announce that Elliot Weingarten, litigation associate in our Washington D.C. office, was awarded the 2020 Klepper Prize for Volunteer Excellence. The award recognizes attorneys early in their careers who have made a significant volunteer contribution to the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, D.C.'s oldest and largest general civil legal services organization.

Over the past seven years, Elliot has been one of Legal Aid’s most active pro bono volunteers, dedicating most of his time to issues surrounding housing justice. Elliot has personally handled over a dozen eviction cases, as well as mentored his colleagues on additional cases. His work has enabled families to stay in their homes, and required landlords to remedy severe housing conditions. Jodi Feldman, manager of Legal Aid's Pro Bono Program, put it well: "Elliot truly gets what pro bono work is all about and what it means for his clients to have a lawyer…  Elliot meets his clients where they are and does not pass judgment. And he never wavers in his commitment to advocate zealously until he can get the best result for his client."
