Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts and Brown Rudnick Celebrate 10th Anniversary of Holiday Card Contest for
Boston Public School Students

Contest to support arts education was co-created by Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and Brown Rudnick, and is supported by Boston Public Schools

Boston, MA, December 11, 2014 – Brown Rudnick and the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts (“VLA-MA”), a program of the Arts & Business Council of Greater Boston, announces the winners of its 10th annual Holiday Card Contest for Boston Public High School students. Created in 2004 to support arts education in Boston Public Schools, the contest has provided an opportunity for educators to engage students in an art enrichment program. The contest was initiated with a grant from The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation and with assistance from the Brown Rudnick Center for the Public Interest, as well as through the support of the Boston Public Schools.

Al Wallis, Executive Director of the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation Corp., commented, “There is a gap in arts education that hinders the ability of school children to discover their artistic talents and gain an understanding and appreciation of art. For the last ten years, the VLA and Brown Rudnick have taken a leadership position to close that gap to support and encourage art education in Boston Public Schools.”

On December 3, 2014, contestants, their teachers and families, and Afton Cyrus, Arts Partnership Manager at Boston Public Schools, gathered to celebrate this year’s winners at an awards reception hosted by the contest sponsor, the Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation at the law firm of Brown Rudnick LLP. The first-place winner had his artwork made into a holiday card which is used by the Firm and sold by VLA-MA. Every winning student received an award certificate and art supplies. The 2014 first-place honorees are:

High School Winner
 Snowman Construction Site (by Nick Shea, 12th grader, East Boston High School / Teacher: Ron MacGeorge)

Middle School Winner
 Untitled (by Majesty Jackson, 7th grade, Henderson K-12 Inclusion / Teacher: Jozeph Zaremba)

Elementary School Winner
 Untitled (by Zoe Klein, 5th grade, Joyce Kilmer School / Teacher: Elaine McCabe)

“The holiday card contest is having a direct impact on Boston area students by offering a platform for self-expression through art,” added James Grace, Executive Director, VLA-MA. “With ongoing support from the Brown Rudnick Center for the Public Interest and The Brown Rudnick Charitable Foundation, along with the Boston Public Schools, we will continue to encourage young talent in the community.”

Brown Rudnick and the VLA-MA have a longstanding partnership. The Firm is a three-time recipient of the Council’s Robert B. Fraser Award for Pro Bono Excellence. Additionally, Brown Rudnick and the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts of Massachusetts were recognized as the 2007 Corporate Philanthropy Partners of the Year by the Boston Business Journal.
